Tutorial: How to Paint an Oyster Shell in Watercolour

I love to use ceramic palettes when I’m painting with watercolours. The paint flows across them beautifully (unlike plastic palettes where it can tend to bead up) and a handmade palette is a functional work of art.

The newest palette in my collection is a Kumo palette by Pottery by Eleni. It’s inspired by the iridescence and shape of oyster shells- so I thought I’d use it to paint an oyster in watercolour! Follow along with the video for tips- you can paint along with me using the reference image I’ve shared below, or create a shell of your own.

You will need:

  • Watercolour paint. I’m using Dioxazine Purple, Burnt Sienna and Monte Amiata Natural Sienna (substitute with yellow ochre or raw sienna). Dioxazine Purple is also called Carbazole Violet or Winsor Violet, depending on the brand.

  • Watercolour paper. I like Fabriano Artistico Cold Press 300 gsm, but you can substitute your preferred paper.

  • Brushes- large and small. I’m using a Da Vinci Casaneo size 4 round and size 2 quill.

  • Water pot

  • Palette

  • Masking tape

  • Reference photo
